Advertising Production - Code & Conventions

A.P1 - Explain the ways in which target audiences for advertisements are classified
(Mass, Niche, Audience Classification: Standards Occupations Classification (SOC), Psychographics, Demographics)

Mass: A mass audience is a diverse collection of media technologies that reach a large audience by media communications,

Niche: A niche audience is a faction of a total market or an audience, these niche audiences are a  with a certain group who does a certain thing, for example 25-35 aged people who drive Ferraris are a niche market.

Psychographics: psychographics are a methodology used to describe consumers on psychological attributes. Psychographics are applied to studies in personality, values, opinions, attitudes, interests, and lifestyle.

Geodemographics: geodemographis are a technique for discovering whether individuals of the population can fall into different groups by making comparisons of characteristics.

A.P2 - Explain the codes and conventions of advertisement production within a specific media sector.

Branding: Branding is the recognition of a company through the use of narrative, name, association, e.g. celebrity endorsement, values, e.g traditional family values and brand logo.

Narrative: Like John Lewis narrative becomes a big part in advertisement as they have created a short but powerful narrative pieces such as 'The bear and the Hare', 'Buster the boxer', and 'Monty the penguin'. (I have referenced this in my Task link above).

Name: Name is a big part of advertisements as it give the audience the identity of the brand and the product show in the video.

Celebrity endorsement: celebrity endorsement isn't a major part of advertisment but can be used as a way for the audience to remember the brand from remembering the the celebrity included in the ad.

Values: Values are what the brand stands on showing the audience a positive representation of the company through a child friendly broadcast of their adverts leaving out an vulgarity.

Brand logo: the brand logo is the major part of advertising as it shows the audience a remediable logo that they can trust.

Image: Image in an advert is what creates the scene and the narrative that the audience will pay attention to. some of the things that creates a good image in adverts are: the types of images, lighting, camera positioning, camera angle, position, mise-en-scene, colours, and the connotations/denotation of an image.

Types of images - In adverts there are different types of images that can determine what type of ad it can be, two of these are: illustrations and photographs.
photographs - Photographs are images from a DSLR that are highly detailed and makes it easier for the audience to see what the print advertisement is about.
Illustrations - illustrations are a more cartoonist look to advertisement campaigns and are used in animated adverts such as 'bear and the hare john lewis advert'.

Lighting - Lighting has a key roles in shooting an advertisement as it helps the audience see whats happening and creates a mood for the audience that can be shown through bright orange light, or a cold dark light, these colours are linked with lighting through both production and post-production as they can help associate emotional moods or can help associate connotations to what the advert is based upon.

Camera positioning/angle - Camera positioning can help the audience see whats happening around the character or helps see the expression the character is giving this links in a lot with camera angle as the angle can show the characters dominant or in-dominant position through out. Both of these camera techniques can create a great advert through the use of different shot such as long shots, extreme close ups, etc.

Mise-en-scene - Mise-en-scene is what make up the scene by using a small items to create great detail in the production, mise-en-scene can help the audience figure out the characters age, social class, gender, and personality through objects such as a small blue bedroom with ripped wallpaper and clothes allover the floor, these items show that the character is a lower class male teen who lives in a council house.

connotation/denotation - connotation is the small details about the characters or scene in the advert such as a shining star, which resembles hope. This can be used a lot for the audience to decode the encoded connotations in the advert. Denotation is what the audience clearly sees within the advert such as the boy and his pet penguin in 'john Lewis' Monty the penguin advert'. This is commonly used in all tv, film, and print media based products by default as there is always a denotation to whatever the producers show.

Slogan/Tagline - The slogan and tagline are messages given to the audience to reinforce messages or give the audience a desire for the product, the slogan or taglines are commonly something related to the theme of the advert and are remembered by the audience.

A.P3 - Identified three examples of Gunn's 12 advertisement types and explain their use of persuasive techniques to appeal to the target audience.

Persuasive techniques to appeal to target audience - pathos, logos, ethos
Form - realist, narrative/anti-realist narrative, animation, stand-alone/series/campaigns.
Style - Humorous, surreal, dramatic, and parodic

Pathos - Pathos is a quality in advertising that invokes a emotional response from the audience, this can be used through language choice which can be both positive and negative, for example positive language could be love, excitement and negative language could be jealousy, hatred.

Narrative - narrative is a major piece is john Lewis' advert and without it they would have a advert that would make no sense which means that the audience would money from crowd funding. Narrative can help give the audience a visual idea of what is happening in the advert and can help create meaning to those who can relate to the theme.

Dramatic - dramatic adverts are used a lot in TV as they help set the characters and scene in an advert and keeps the audience intrigued in what is happening, for example john Lewis creates a lot of dramatic adverts that appeal to a certain target audience such as 'Monty the penguin', 'buster the boxer', etc.

A.M1 - Analyse the application of codes and convection's and persuasive techniques in advertisements across different media sectors. (Advert analysis)
(I referenced this in my blog: Christmas Advert Analysis)

In print media they use a range of different texts and font's to go to a certain theme that stands out to the audience, this could be a range of different Christmas related features such as candy cane fonts, Christmas related images (elves, reindeer, and (or) Santa clause). These print adverts must have a simple colour scheme and scheduling for the products brand such as release date for the product date, for discounts, etc. Many print media must follow the required size for bill boards posters, e.g. the original poster size must be 30" x 40" (which is 2 sheets) across the billboard base.

Christmas Advert (Sainsbury's) - Advertising Production

Me and Adam have finally finished our Christmas advert, even though the mise en scene doesn't show any Christmas features such as baubles, snow or presents. This is something me and Adam could work on in future projects.

In the project we had help from Alex Barker, Oliver Massingham, Connor Honeyman & Shanade Conway. Alex was playing the brother where as Shanade was playing the sister who don't see eye to eye, and the sister is being bullied by her brother but when some over students bully his sister he intervenes and pulls her a side out of the way of the bullies.

Adam was the camera Operator for this project and I edited the project ready for it to be handed in for the deadline given.

Because me and Adam could not find a cobblers that would allow us to Film in their shops we had to come up with a back up which was this idea after Christmas was over, this caused us to lose our mise en' scene and could reduce our marks when handed in.

The script we used for our Christmas advert is very small but we still exceed the time restriction to about 30 second more in future products we will try and keep the product under it maximum time restraint and make sure we don't exceed it.

In our Christmas advert we have used a range visual and audio material to immerse the demographic, to show this we used the Lilly Allen's 'somewhere only we know' which we did not get clearance to use, unfortunately the audio didn't export with the video. We also included the brand logo so the audience knew which brand it was we were using for our advert. However the advert as the whole is a preferred reading which helps us by listening to the discussions between the audiences understanding of the advert. Within the edit of the advert we used dip to black which helped us change the scene in the advert, this cost nothing to be imported into the advert. When we exported the video we used the H.264 format with a 1920 x 1080 quality.

Before we started our production for our advert we did some research on Sainsbury's and found out that the majority of customers are the between the age of 30 and 50, they're have a lot of positive feedback from their customers. In our advert we did not follow the brief exactly as we have exceed the duration limit to a minute which could have been cut down to 30 seconds if we removed some of the scenes in the advert. Our advert is a TV ad which is used to persuade parents and children to shop at Sainsbury's, however the outcome of the advert did not convey the messages we wanted to show and went against our preferred reading.

Our self generated source material for our advert was a mind map showing the ideas we  had for our advert and a list of the items that symbolise Christmas, both of these help us to come up with our final idea and produce a advert that suited the clients brief, however because we were running out of time we came up with a last minute idea which didn't follow the brief and went over the duration the brief stated. The target audience for our advert is young teens and millennia's who watch TV and (or) go to schools like college or secondary, for our original idea our demographic was for children and families as a secondary demographic as our idea included the idea of children watching the advert and asking the parents the parent to buy the items the brand was displaying. To come to this demographic we check the site to see their demographic which expanded amongst all ages, we then narrowed it down to the most common reason adults buy shoes which was mostly for school wear and common wear for children.

New Years Resolutions about your Studies

For my 3 resolutions about my studies I will:
  1. Make sure I have all of the paperwork sorted before filming.
  2. Stay Back and get the paper work sorted before the deadline.
  3. Make sure everything is ready for filming and the actors and locations are still available for the day.

Social Media Campaign

Time To Change:

Time to change is a mental health campaign that includes a range of mental disabilities such as:
- Anxiety & Panic Attacks                    - Personality Disorders
- Bipolar Disorder                                 - PTSD
- Depression                                          - Psychosis
- Eating Disorders                                 - Schizophrenia
- OCD                                                    - Self harm

In their tags at the top of their webpage they have a range of pages the user can choose from, to see how they approach their audience and information about mental health.

Time to change have a range of pages on popular social media such as Facebook, twitter, Instagram and YouTube. These pages follow their initial layout of their website using the same content such as the own custom header and logo, there pages also include insight to different areas of mental health and solutions towards them. On their webpage they include a section called 'myths & facts' which shows the point of view of those with mental illnesses.

This media campaign was created in 2007 and achieved a 9.6% change with the estimate of 4.1m people with improved attitudes.

Depression and Suicide Statistics:
Suicide. Up to 15% of those who are clinically depressed die by suicide. In 1997, suicide was the 8th leading cause of death in the United States. 10.6 out of every 100,000 persons died by suicide. In 1996 there were an estimated 500,000 suicide attempts. 72% per cent of all suicides and 79% of all firearm suicides are committed by white men. The highest suicide rate was for white men over 85 years of age-65 per 100,000 persons.

The majority of suicide attempts are expressions of extreme distress that need to be addressed, and not just a harmless bid for attention. A suicidal person should not be left alone and needs immediate mental health treatment. Among young people 20 to 24 years of age, there were 2,384 deaths among 17,512,000 people in this age group. The gender ratio in this age group was 7:1 (males: females).

1st Ideas for Social Media after Research:
Our first ideas for the social action project we plan to produce an informative, semi-documentary style film and a range of connecting print based media and a range of intertextual social media pages. Our projects as a whole is based on the theme of mental health, mostly depression and suicide effecting the younger generation (Teens), the film itself will be split into 3 sections:
  • A teenage girl stood in white clothing against a white screen looking directly at the camera, the girl will be telling her story throughout the film, then we will hear a voice over of the girl talking about how she sees herself and what she struggle to do because of her depression as words appear such as "worthless, disgrace, ugly "on the screen around the girl. The girl closes hers eyes as the camera gets a close up of the girls face as she opens her eyes saying "I'm Anna and I killed myself on 22nd September 2016". We feel this really impact the audience as it is a younger girl around their age and they may connect with some of these things, however, they won't realise that something ignoring those feelings.
  • We then switch to a series of interviews, starting with a mental health nurse explaining what depression is and how it affects younger people in particular and some of the consequences it could lead to if you don't deal with it.
  • There will then be some text upon the screen, briefly explaining what the actors of 'Chatroom' did and what it was about.
  • We will then have a compilation of interviews from a couple of the chatroom actors, with them talking about the production, how it connects to depression, why it happens, the research they found and statistics about depression.
  • We will then have jess, a young person living with depression and dealing with it every day, answering a few questions on how it happened, why she thinks she has it, her lowest points and how she deals with it daily to give the viewers a real life view on the illness and know that anyone could suffer from it.
  • We then again cut back to the mental health nurse and she talks about the consequences of the depression, including suicide and the solutions and help that is out there (really pushing the fact that nobody is alone).
(All research plans can be found in the production folder.)

Christmas Advert Annalysis - Advertising Production

EDEKA WEINSNACHT CLIP
AUDIO ONLY:
From listening to the audio from the advert you can hear the protagonist walking through a door as a emotional piece is played in the background, A couple seconds after the start of the song you can hear a quick conversation of the daughter of the protagonist on the phone as it cuts off .This advert shows pathos in the advert to give the audience a tearful performance from the company. As the advert moves along you can tell the scene changes a couple of times when you hear the cars vigorously honking their horns to the office phones that ring sharply in the background, The music dies down slowly to be broken by the gasp of the protagonist's daughter as he talks to her and the family celebrate festivities as the music fades back into the video.

VISUALS AND AUDIO:
As the video makes it's quick start you see the protagonist and his dog walking into the house as the phone bleeps as he stands next to the phone listening to his daughter and grandchild on the phone. Just before the voice recording finishes the protagonist looks out the window to see a family reuniting for Christmas which shows the audience how lonely he has been throughout the years as it shows him sat at a table by himself for 3 years. The scene changes a couple of times as the first change is an establishing shot of a Chinese of Japanese street as it cuts to a mid-shot of a white man who checks his phone, the second change is a house as a young girl and a young boy run into shot as he parents come into view, The last change is a shot of a hospital as it quickly cuts to a doctor who signs some forms and pulls out his phone.

After the doctor pulls out his phone the scenes are cut in reverse as it gets a close up of the Doctors, Daughters and Businessman's facial expressions of shock and again moves forward to the people again as you get a close of their emotional states as after the doctors reaction it cuts to the businessman's room as he packs his clothes and looks at a wallet of the picture of his father. The Scene cuts once again as the children of the old man reunite for his funeral as you can see to close up and mid-shot of the Daughter and the second son as you get a dark dismal lighting to match with the scene and setting in general. After the funeral the scene cuts to the family as they explore the house as it cuts to wide shot of the living room as the table is set up neatly as it cuts to the family looking at each other in confusion. It cuts to a long shot of the old man as he creeps into view as the music fades out slowly with a gasp of the daughter, as the old man interrupts as it intercut between the old man and the reaction of his family. The old man's granddaughter runs into view as the old picks her up and cuts to the family sat down having a Christmas dinner as they all celebrate merrily with bright lights in the scene showing the emotions of the family around them.

Codes and Conventions for Weinsnacht clip:
In this advert they find their target audience of Families by using demographics to show the audience a realist narrative of bringing family together at Christmas, the content they use in this advert a emotional song that is played in the background of the advert as the camera angles help shows the actors emotional state and dialogue to show how distant the family is and then how close they become at the end. In the advert the use their brand logo go give an identity and name to the company as well as a tagline that state: "time to come home", this tagline could become memorable and reinforces the message of being together as a family for Christmas.

In the Advert they use 3 of Gunn's 12 advertisement types, one of the persuasive technique they used is pathos which invokes an emotional response by using the idea of not being able to celebrate Christmas with family because they're deceased or away for the holidays, this could cause an emotional response because it might bring back memories of spending Christmas with their family or with friends that they are close to.

Sainsbury's 2014 Christmas Advert

In this Advert it begins with the sound of bombs dropping as the men are waiting, this helps the audience know that it is during the time of war and helps set the scene for the rest of the advert. The bombs fall silent and the singing fades in as the Germans start singing Christmas carols, the singing fades out as a loud screech overcomes the audience showing the audience how scared the soldiers where crossing 'no mans land' and helps give an idea of what happened on Christmas 1914. Sainsbury's based their advert of real events.

The advert as a whole changes it's light to show the dark time and the bright times of world war 1 and how the soldiers feel about being there. In the advert they use natural light to show the shimmer of hope when that the package he received isn't bad news, the robin seen at 01:10 represents Joy which uses the kuleshov effect as the robin represents the soldiers attitude and joyfulness throughout there time in the trenches.

The lighting at 01:56 changes from a dark tone to a bright tone to represent the soldiers trust in each other as both sides cross no mans land to negotiate peace, near the end of the clip the German and English soldiers sake hands and say their farewells before turning around as the German soldier gives a menacing look that shows realism to the fact that both sides would have to kill each other again.

In this advert they use demographics to find their target audience of adults members as it shows the viewer an realist narrative based on true events in the 1st world war (1914), this advert might be close to some of the audience since some of their family would've fought in the war in current wars. In the advert they show branding through using an on-screen representation of their product (which was a limited edition chocolate bar).

Codes and Conventions:
In the advert there is a lot of high and low angles that shows their emotional state, the slogan for the advert is "Christmas is for sharing" which reinforces the message that Christmas is for giving and not getting. Sainsbury's uses Gunn's persuasive techniques and advertisement types to combine to invoke an emotional response through pathos by showing a dramatic, realist narrative of true events from 100 years ago because it shows 'how the guns fell silent' and what happened on the day Britain and Germany made peace for Christmas another reason this advert causes an emotional response is that 16 million people died world wide which gives it a more emotional twist showing the men that have killed millions unite and celebrate Christmas together.

M&S 2016 Christmas Ad: Christmas with love from Mrs Claus

This advert gives of a comedic outlook on Mr and Mrs Claus as it shows a narrative story of family. This clip in general is very bright and has 3 establishing shots that shows distance and time during the advert as Mrs Claus embarks on her journey whilst using the fantasy aspect of a child's belief.

The lighting in the advert is brought throughout which could show how bright and merry Mrs clauses personality is and how caring she is to set out on Santa's job to help this young boy.

Codes and Conventions:
The Target audience for this advert is based around children as it helps to give imagination to children and uses demographics to select this type of audience as it shows the audience a child's beliefs and reality of Santa Claus and his home in the north pole, the advert uses the fantasy aspect of a child's mind to give us an emotive narrative

Task 1: Media Campaign Analysis - Think Road Safety

For this task I am going to look at the way the think campaign targets it's audience through a range of different range of communication channels, such as Website, social media and Print media to promote their campaign to their audience. The primary audience is drivers from the ages of 17+ and a secondary audience of primary school children (5+) which teaches them how to keep safe on the roads. The selection of the collected communication channels fit the target audience.
The logo used for the think campaign uses a design which represents a zebra crossing  which shows the audience that the campaign is about the use of roads and how to be safe when using them, the exclamation mark used at the end shows that the audience needs to stop and clearly think before crossing and not to act stupidly when near the roads.

Think road safety is a social campaign that helps the younger and older generations to be more cautious when around busy traffic highways depending on if they are crossing roads or if they are a driver themselves, this campaign helps to get its message around the country by using a small portfolio of adverts with actors of different ethnicities. To show cohesion in their videos they don't only show that a certain person can cause accidents but that anyone in the community can be a victim of road accidents, to show this they use a range of videos with different cast every time to give the effect that no one is alone when making these mistakes. Throughout all of their sources they use cohesion to represent their campaign and make sure that the large variety of members know this company by using the same logo to keep them from confusion across the different platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and both Think sites and keep their posts consistent linking them to all platforms within their collection.

With the use of motor vehicles increasing throughout the years the Think campaign helps to keep
To intrigue the target audience the campaign uses a vast range of social media to promote and keep up to date with the community through Facebook and Twitter to do this they create their own videos to show the community how accidents are caused and how to avoid them. These videos are shared around the media network which gives them support from those who share the videos or ads to get their message to their target audience. Another way they get their message across to their audience is through the use of anchorage, using stickers on cars as a way to promote the campaign, these stickers also have a way of promoting and supporting their social media by building curiosity to those driving by or behind another car so the driver can search up "Think road safety" to find several links to their social media and their own webpage which includes games for the younger generation to teach them how to cross and be safe correctly. The video uses hash tags to spread cohesion between their platforms and uses a shock factor as a deterrent which stops drivers from going against the law (speed limits,  road safety, etc.), The hash tag used in their videos also help the community of drivers and children know who think are and the lessons they can learn from their campaign. The campaigned video at the moment shows to ways drink driving can cause collisions with pedestrians and drivers on or near the roads. To show this both pages uses cohesion so users of different platforms can't miss any of the posts that can help decrease of roadside accidents, the hash tag they are using is #mates matter which helps with the cohesion of the many platform pages. The use of cohesion in both platforms helps to make sure that the large range of audience can recognize the brand and how it works to create a large boost to audience donations. Another way they use cohesion is through the use of sharable content which make more available actions and encourages the audience into supporting the brand in their media campaign.

(Please hover over to get the link to the site)

This campaign has deemed it self as success because of how many driver are now focusing on the roads instead of phones or other distractions and has used all of their opportunities for anchorage and promotion of their theme products to sell the audience their time and messages they need to know about road safety, the campaign shows it success through the promotion of its sites and reaching out to the community through the use of hash tags in some of their videos which viewers can share online. Throughout the campaign Jim Thornton (Director of Think road safety) makes some of the content appropriate for the younger and older generation as some videos and adverts show more vulgar content such as driving under the influence of drugs and mobile phones where as other videos show more feeble videos to get its message through to the younger generation such as the video "Tales of the road" which uses animated characters to show the dangers of crossing with out looking. Children won't need to focus on putting phones away when crossing or driving because of their age but the campaign could be something they could come back to when they are older and could maybe share with their children. On the side of the page the campaign also displays a number of top tips for drivers seeking help fitting in booster seats or even safety gears for a motorcycle.

In their most recent campaign post they have supported information about looking at phones when driving stating it looses 6 points and £200 fine off your license with a helpline and their own campaign videos which also supports the idea that if you are distracted with a phone whilst driving to switch places with your counter-part or switch of your device until you get out of your vehicle. In this page alone they also show how the law sees the use of handheld devices and what the penalty is if caught using them, According to the RAC only 12% of drivers have admitted to using their handheld device whilst driving throughout the last 12 months, and 12% admitted to checking texts, emails, or social media.

The Think campaign uses bright colour that contrast with the blue background on the children's think campaign game site which uses the use of characters displayed in the adverts, bright colours that attract a younger audience and the use of colour connotation representing stop and go
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On the other hand the UNESCO world book day campaign focuses its work on helping children in other countries like Zanzibar and Pemba to read and get the education children in countries like the UK and America get. This campaign mostly focuses on a younger audience by letting them dress up as their favourite characters like Wally and Paddington, Schools in the UK use this event to purchase books for the children in Africa. In Pemba 61% of the community live below the poverty line and illiteracy contributes to the problem of child labour.

UNESCO helps its cause by using social media to help the families and lives affected by their style of living, UNESCO have marked over 100 countries helping those who lack education and supports them by sending them aid and resources such as books to help them learn the literacy skills needed for their future. To put their step further they use a number of social media such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to help get their message across the globe. The children in Zanzibar only get a wage of less the $1 which show the commitment to the team as the try to gain the audience of both the younger and older generation by presenting themselves as needy which in their case is relevant to help the children survive the conditions of their home countries. However UNESCO uses its use of social media in a positive way that could impact the conditions in countries from the south-east by donating resources to these countries as a way of allowing poor children of accessing better jobs in their future

Music Video shooting (day 1)

Today me, Luke and Joe started to shoot the music video with the help of 3 actors (Alex Barker, Sophie Byrant and Connor Honeyman). During the shooting we have shot a number of 14 shots which where based on the argument of the Matthew Smith (Connor Honeyman) and Lucy Graham (Sophie Byrant), at the last couple of minutes we took the time to take a over shoulder shot of Matthew as he is looking at lucy and Toby Cropland (Alex Barker). Tomorrow I need to get a couple more shots near KFC and in college grounds to continue the narrative of the story.
